• Enlarge Close to the camera in full sun, the segments swollen into a rosette around a pale green center with brown spines out of white areoles and a second cluster sitting below it.
• Enlarge A small plant held flat against a redwood fence in hard sun, two dark green ribbed heads growing off a wider pale stump that still has dirt packed around its base, one head taller than the other, the whole thing throwing a sharp shadow on the boards.
