Jims Special is reportedly a blue, short-spined with rounded ribs, raised at Jim Hall's Australian nursery, Cactus Country, and carried there as J16. The same name covers a second plant from that nursery, a with longer spines and more strongly drawn ribs, so a seller's label needs to say which of the two you are being offered.

Reportedly, the pachanoi plant shows the usual green to blue-green , short spines and rounded ribs. Reportedly, the peruvianus plant carries longer spines and more strongly drawn ribs.
