Perlite
The white popcorn-like mineral in bagged potting mixes, used to make soil drain faster. Cheap, light and everywhere, and it works — but it floats to the surface over time and holds more water than it looks like it should, growers say. Pumice does the same job without either habit, which is why it is the upgrade.
