The first year from seed

Everything after the lid comes off is one long ramp: more light, less humidity, more room. The order matters, one change at a time matters, and at the end of it none of them will look like either parent.

The seedlings are up and the box is still shut. From here almost everything you do is one small step in a long ramp — more light, less humidity, more room — and the whole skill is running it slowly enough. Get it right and you end up with fat little columns that hold themselves upright. Get it wrong and they stall, and a stalled seedling can sit there doing nothing for weeks.

Opening the box

Start when they have about three rows of spines, which is roughly two months in. Take the lid off for growing intervals over a week or two — five minutes, ten, fifteen, half an hour, an hour, then longer — until it can stay off. With cling film instead: a couple of pinholes, enlarge them a few days later, then nearly off, misting whenever the condensation stops coming back.

A cactus seedling starts as a tiny green ball with two stubby cotyledons on top, and stays that shape for months. Ribs and real spines only arrive once it has some size.Each panel is drawn big enough to read rather than to one scale — beside the last of the three, the first would be a speck. A year of a seedling is about an inch.
  • Punch the drainage holes in the bottom the moment the top comes off. Small, and at the lowest points; a hot metal skewer makes a clean hole.
  • Take the heat mat away at the same time. From here it is only drying the mix out.
  • Once the cover is fully off: mist three times a day for a few days, then twice, then once, then every other day.
  • Get a fan moving air across them from the day they are uncovered.
  • **Change one thing at a time.** Light, humidity, temperature — stresses stack, and a seedling under two at once stops growing.

Anything clear and at least four inches tall is a perfectly good greenhouse. Seal it with cling film rather than its own lid, and then leave it shut: you check through the plastic, and there should always be condensation on the walls.The mark at the bottom right: the drainage holes go in the moment the top comes off, small and at the lowest points. Light, water and food

Push the light up about 10% at a time from a month after — one notch on a dimmer, an inch closer, half an hour longer — then leave them ten days to a fortnight to settle before the next step. Aim for roughly 500 once they stand a couple of inches high, 750 across the whole tray somewhere in month six to eight, and 1,000 to 1,250 once they are past a year old. Driving light up as fast as they will take it is what produces fat seedlings that hold themselves upright and never need staking.

Water is where the seedling rules invert the adult ones. Never let a seedling dry out completely. Water while the mix is still slightly damp underneath, alternating a bottom soak with a top mist so it neither dries out below nor goes hydrophobic. Chlorine leaves water that has stood a few hours; chloramine, which is what most municipal supplies use now, does not — so use a dechlorinator, bottled spring water, or rain.

Feeding starts gently and arrives by about month five: alternate a liquid kelp product with a complete fertiliser plus calcium, magnesium and micronutrients, beginning at about half label strength. For , a first feed for a baby seedling sits around 0.7 mS/cm, a normal label-rate application around 1.8, and 3.5 is close to toxic.

Moving them on

  • **Up-pot when they start touching each other.** Competition slows them, and tangled roots only get worse the longer you leave it.
  • At about six months, or 2 to 3 inches tall, separate them — under running water if the roots have knitted together.
  • **Seedling mix differs from adult mix in exactly two ways:** smaller grit, an eighth to a quarter of an inch, and slightly more organic matter, because a small plant carries less water inside it.
  • Plastic cells or small plastic pots, around 2.5 by 2.5 by 3 inches. Not terracotta and not fabric — they dry a small volume of soil far too fast.
  • Keep the soil line high in the pot for airflow. Do not sink a seedling down into it.
  • **Outdoors:** four or five layers of 30 to 40% shade cloth, taking one off every couple of weeks. In a high-UV summer one layer may need to stay on until autumn. A strong indoor light does not prepare a seedling for the sun, because the spectrum is different.
  • Seed-grown plants stay in pots for a few years before they go in the ground; planted out too young they stall. Cuttings, unlike seedlings, can go straight in.

Fungus gnats, the one pest that matters here

Adults are about 3 mm and look like tiny mosquitoes. The larvae are about 6 mm, transparent, and live in the top layer of the mix. Only the larvae do damage, and only to seedlings between a few weeks and a couple of months old — a grown cactus is unaffected. The symptom is unmistakable: seedlings lying flat because their roots have been eaten.

Yellow sticky traps deal with the adults. For the larvae, weakest to strongest: raw potato slices laid on the surface and binned daily, then BTI — sold as mosquito dunks or bits — in every watering for two to three weeks, then predatory nematodes. BTI is the usual answer, and it spares the beneficial microbes.

The one pest that matters in a seedling tray, and the two stages look nothing alike. The adult is a nuisance you can see; the larva is the one doing the damage, and it lives in the top layer of the mix.Yellow sticky traps deal with the adults. The honest part: none of them will be the parents

Every seedling in the tray is a new individual, and it is worth sitting with that before you get attached to any of them. Two siblings out of one fruit differ in form, in vigour, and later in the size and shape of their flowers.

  • A cross with a monstrose parent that passes the trait on can throw a lot of monstrose seedlings — dozens to hundreds in a single fruit in one recorded case. A different bridgesii line gave three multi-headed seedlings out of sixty.
  • Some crosses reliably throw variegation: five variegated out of thirteen in one pot from a terscheckii cross. Variegated seedlings grow noticeably more slowly while they are establishing.
  • A split-headed seedling is not a promise of anything. Several have grown up entirely ordinary.
  • A plant that looks completely normal can carry monstrose genes without ever showing them. One grower only found out when about half of that plant's seedlings came out monstrose.

This is the whole difference between the two ways of making more plants. Cuttings hand you the same plant again. Seed hands you children, and every one of them is a new individual.A packet sold as a cross between two famous clones contains neither of them. It contains their children, and they will not all be good.

Which is the argument against culling. Do not throw out a plain-looking seedling early. It has not shown you what it is yet, and several of the things worth having only turn up later.
