• Enlarge A cut stem held up overhead against blue sky and the underside of a tree, broad soft ribs running up from the pale cut face at the bottom and the top end knotted and lumped, with a few long straw-colored spines. — Held up to the light: ribbed at the cut end, knotted at the top.

• Enlarge Held up against a cloudless sky, a cutting whose ribs wander and fold over one another the whole way down; the wood fence and the lawn sit small behind it.
• Enlarge A long spineless column, pale sage green with soft twisting ribs, held up in the backyard so it curves over and the blunt tip hangs down, with a redwood fence, dry lawn, a potted jade and a bed of pink roses behind it in hard midday sun. — Not a spine anywhere on the piece in frame.

• Enlarge One long TBMA Revert stem held up against the redwood fence, smooth and spineless with ribs that wander and crease down its length, while the shorter knobbed segments of the clump behind it carry long white spines.
• Enlarge A sage-green column held upright against a redwood fence, its crown crusted with dry tan patches and one small bright-green bud sitting in the middle of them under three dark spines; an old gray-barked plant leans in from the left.
