- It reportedly holds a checkerboard pattern, ranges from green to blue depending where it is grown, and has thrown several variegated pieces.

- Reportedly, new spines come in red and stay red in shade but bleach white in full sun; a relaxed plant makes almost no spines, while damage or stress brings on strong red ones.

- Columns on the original stand have reportedly reached roughly 24 inches around, with new growth regularly four to five inches thick, and the plant gets very notchy indoors under artificial light.
