Glossary

Monstrose

Growers call it a growth form where the plant grows in strange, irregular, lumpy or melted-looking shapes instead of neat ribbed columns. Many monstrose plants switch back and forth between normal and strange growth over their lives, growers say.

A monstrose clone can grow perfectly ordinary for a year and then go strange, on the same plant, with no warning. Buying one young is a bet on what it does next.
