Top dressing

Growers call it a layer of grit or fine gravel spread over the soil surface. It steadies a fresh cutting, stops soil splashing onto the flesh, and looks finished — but it also slows the soil's drying and hides how wet it is under there, growers say. Use it on established plants if you like the look; skip it while anything is still rooting.

Every photograph in the yard pages and the shop is of a plant grown here, except where a listing says it was grown by somebody else — it says so on the listing, above the price.
