Grafting basics
Slice the top off one cactus, sit a piece of another on it, hold it with two rubber bands, and a week later they are one plant. What is actually happening, and why you do not have to do it.

What a graft is
Two cacti joined so that one plant's roots feed another plant's top. The top piece is the and the rooted base is the .
Nothing is added between them and nothing is glued. Pressure is the entire mechanism. The join only works if the two vascular rings touch — the ring of conducting tissue you can see as a circle in each freshly cut face. Line the rings up, press, and the plant does the rest.

Cactus to cactus only. Euphorbias look the part but are not cacti — they bleed white latex, sometimes carry small leaves, and will only graft onto each other.
Why anyone bothers
- Speed. The scion grows faster and fatter and pups sooner than the same piece would on its own roots.
- Numbers. One cutting becomes roughly ten grafts, and those ten become a hundred.
- Rescue. A broken or very small piece that would otherwise be wasted can be saved.
- Survival. Variegated and other low-chlorophyll plants need a green plant feeding them.
- Isolating a trait. A single odd streak gets grafted over and over until it is a stable line.
And the honest counterweight: most of these plants root perfectly well on their own — the people who graft the most are usually the first to say so. It is a technique, not a requirement. The rescue case has a limit worth knowing too: micrografting to save an seedling fails more often than it works, and a plant that can never feed itself is a rescue you may not want to have succeeded.
What it changes about the plant
This is the part a buyer needs. Some grow fast and almost normal-looking grafted, and slow and on their — one clone, two very different plants. A very small monstrose piece on strong stock will push pups larger than itself, while the same piece rooted pushes pups smaller. Grafting will also rescue a tip that went thin: cut it off, graft it, and it resumes at its full original width.
What grafting does not do is upgrade the clone. The piece on top keeps its own name and its own genetics — the stock lends it roots and speed, nothing more. Take it off the stock later and you are back to the plant you started with.
Choosing a stock
Fast, fat, well rooted and actively growing. In North America is the default: cheap, hardy, roots easily, and its spines do not break off in your hand. Avoid anything that pups heavily, because those pups will steal the energy. Young fresh stock beats an old gnarly one — bigger is not automatically better.
Growers usually graft when the stock is around two feet tall, and the top they cut off it gets replanted and becomes next year's stock. The whole thing runs as a closed loop, which is a large part of why grafted plants are not expensive.

One variable matters more than technique, and it is settled days before you pick up a blade.

Hydrate both plants first
Water the rootstock thoroughly at least a day before, and four days is better. A plump stock stays flat or slightly domed when you cut it; a thirsty one goes concave and pulls away from the scion as it dries. One grower's tally: three of five grafts took with a dehydrated donor, and all five with a plump one.

The cut flesh shrinks as it cures and the ring of skin around it does not. What is left is a rim, and the rim lifts the scion off.

Cut the top edges away, between the ribs as well, until no skin can reach the scion. Then the two faces can stay together while they dry.

Bands over the top and down past the pot, plus a ring round the base so the whole stock cannot pull loose.
Step 1: Set the bench up before you cut anything
A clean disposable surface, several pre-sterilised blades laid out, 91% isopropyl in a spray bottle, paper towel squares, scissors for spines, bands and a cup. Dry the blade after the alcohol — residue browns the flesh and fails the graft.

Not flat means a failed graft; not horizontal and the slippery scion slides straight off. A wide blade is far easier to steer into a true flat cut than a narrow one. Keep cutting lower on the stock until its ring is big enough to match the scion's.
Step 3: Join them while both faces are still wet
Work fast. The cut faces must never touch the bench, the paper or your fingers. If either has sat for more than a minute or two, take another thin slice off it.

Two rubber bands crossed over the top is the beginner method; tape, a bandage or stockings do the same job. Hold for four days to a week, keep it dry and shaded, and do not peek.

A good union looks welded all the way round, with no orange, brown or black anywhere on it. Put a cup back over it for a few more days against sunburn and debris.
Unwrapped at a week: the join is one continuous line, the scion has not moved, and the colour runs straight through it. That is a weld. Step 6: First pups at about a month
Ribs inflating rather than deflating is the sign that it took.
A month on, a taken graft starts spending: new growth at the tip, and usually a pup off the scion. That is stock roots feeding scion tissue, which is the whole reason to graft.
When it goes wrong, and it will
"Failed graft, please help" is a recurring post type in the community, and the community treats failure as ordinary rather than exceptional. Worth knowing before your first attempt.

Rain on a fresh graft is a stated cause of losses, so keep it dry. Orange or rust colour at the union gets a dab of sulphur mixed with alcohol into a paste and brushed on. And any pups the rootstock throws below the union have to come off — one grower ran that test side by side, and the graft with rootstock pups left on produced nothing at all while its twin produced two vigorous ones.

Handling and safety
- Cardboard wrapped round a spiny stem, rather than gloves. Long spines pass straight through leather.
- Eye protection with the spiniest species. Spines have put growers in hospital — one lodged between the bones of a finger. Do not learn what one does to an eye.
- Support the top piece with your free hand as the cut finishes. Big sections are heavier than they look and they shatter on a hard floor.
Over years the union thickens until it is barely a line, and on stock it never has to be separated.
