How these cacti flower

A bud is a grey smudge for weeks, then a white flower the length of your forearm that opens after dark and is finished by the next evening. What triggers it, how to read the three bud stages, and why some plants never do it at all.

The flower is the biggest thing one of these plants ever does, and you get about a day of it. It opens after dark, it is white, it can be as long as your forearm — and by the following evening it is a wet rag hanging off the . Anything anyone does with has to happen inside that window, which is why growers who breed learn to read a bud weeks before it opens.

It comes out of an areole, like everything else

Spines, branches and flowers all start from the same structure: the small felted pad sitting above the notch on each rib. The ones that flower are the ones near the tip, and a single tip commonly carries two to five flowers at once — eight is not unheard of.

A flower does not get its own organ. It comes out of an areole — the same felted pad that made the spines beside it, and the same one a pup would come out of. On a column the buds appear near the top, on the side that gets the light.One stem carrying buds several weeks apart is normal, and it is why a plant can flower more than once in a season. The ring on the right is the youngest of the three.

The flower itself is a long cone rather than a shallow cup. Usually 15 to 30 centimetres from base to petal tip, white, occasionally yellow and rarely red, on a tube covered so densely in hair that the bud looks felted. That hair is where the genus got its name, and a hairy bud with a hairy fruit behind it is the fastest way to satisfy yourself that you are looking at a true rather than one of the lookalikes.

A long cone rather than a shallow cup, and bigger than people expect: usually 15 to 30 centimetres from the base of the tube to the tip of a petal, carried out sideways from the stem rather than standing up off the top.The scale runs the length of the flower. Reading a bud: three stages

  1. Step 1: Stage one — a fuzzy dot

    A small white or grey tuft at an areole. Do not get excited. A plant throws far more of these than it can afford to carry, and the surplus dries to a crisp and falls off.

  2. Step 2: Stage two — it lengthens, and green shows

    The tuft stretches out and green appears where it meets the plant. Now it is a flower, and it will almost certainly open.

  3. Step 3: Stage three — the petals lift

    The outer petals pull away from the body of the bud. You are a few days out. Start checking the plant in the evening.

Three stages, and the first one is genuinely ambiguous — a fuzzy dot on an areole could still turn out to be a pup. A plant throws far more buds than it can afford to carry and then edits itself back down. The one that is going to open has stretched out past a centimetre with green showing at its base; the one that is not stays a flat grey-white smudge on the areole, unchanged for a fortnight.The two are drawn on the same stem, at the same areole, a fortnight apart. A rooting cutting drops more of them than an established plant does — it is living off stored water and has less to spend.

The fuzz has stretched past a centimetre and there is green at its base. The plant has committed to it.

A does the same arithmetic. Faced with more buds than it has stored energy for, it aborts some rather than run itself flat — that is correct behaviour, not a fault. If you would rather the energy went into two flowers than six, pull the extras off with your fingers. The plant will not mind.

One night, and then it is over

It opens at nightfall and it is spent by the end of the next day. Pollen is only worth collecting for a few hours of that — at dusk with the flower fully open, or at first light the next morning — and a flower wet with rain or a heavy dew has pollen you cannot use at all that day.

It opens after dark and it is spent by the end of the next day. That single night is the whole window: for the flower, for an insect, and for you with a brush.Pollen is only worth collecting for a few hours around the opening. By the third panel there is nothing left to take.

This is the whole reason breeding these plants turns into a bookkeeping job. Two plants you want to have to be in flower on the same night, or you need pollen from one of them already in the freezer.

What actually makes a plant bloom

Two things carry buds through to an open flower: steady moisture and phosphorus. Not floods — steady. A dry spell while a plant is budded is the commonest reason buds drop, so a plant that has decided to flower is one you water more regularly than usual rather than more heavily. Lift phosphorus and potassium in the feed just before and just after and you will see more buds.

Warmth early in the season matters more than most people expect. One collection that moved to a colder climate lost roughly half its flower tufts after a cold May — the tufts appeared, and then simply never became buds.

  • **Size is not the gate.** Small plants flower. A piece around two feet tall and three inches thick has reflowered reliably for growers who cut and repot at that size.
  • **A branch that has flowered before will very likely flower again**, even after it has been cut off and put in a pot. Old flower scars are worth looking for when you buy.
  • **Cuttings from a mature stand come into flower sooner** than cuttings from a young plant. The wood is already old enough.
  • **In the ground beats in a pot.** Plants in the ground bloom earlier and more freely. Letting a potted plant get root-bound can bring flowering forward too, but you pay for it in growth.
  • **Darkness cancels it.** Buds on a cutting that was put away in the dark for a fortnight never opened at all.

The season

Late spring into summer, with a second flush often coming through in high summer. Some hybrids ignore the calendar entirely — there is a that blooms right through winter. You do not have to engineer a cold dormancy to get flowers, either: plants in mild climates where winter barely registers bloom every year.

After the flower

An that has flowered can flower again from the same spot, so a bloom is not a one-off cost. The only way to lose that position is to tear the fruit off by hand and pull the growing point out with it. Cut fruit away at its base with a blade and the areole lives to do it again.

If a flower is not pollinated, that is the end of it — the whole thing withers and drops away, base included, leaving nothing behind. What happens when it is pollinated is two guides further on, and the guide in between explains why it cannot be pollinated by the plant next to it.
