The longer version
TBMA is the long form and TBMB the short form of the monstrose , and a California nursery lists them as A and Clone B, after the lettering of Sacred Succulents.
One grower describes the short form as making short that stack on and beside each other, where the long form grows tall and fairly straight and does not stack its pups.
Character
- slow and steady to fast grower: this one leans toward slow and steady, read from the growth line below.
- nearly smooth to heavily spined: this one leans toward heavily spined, read from the spines line below.
- Spines
- A specialist reference says the spines show even on a small plant, which is one of the ways this form is told from the long one.
- Growth habit
- It reportedly grows in short, thick segments a few inches long that stop and put up new pups on top of and beside one another, slowly building a low, bushy clump. Plants in this yard grow in knobby, stacked segments, and no two take the same shape. Once acclimated they thrive in California full sun, staying compact with excellent color.Seen in my own yard.
